Why Physical Fitness Is Essential for Defence Aspirants

Physical fitness plays a major role in defence preparation. Defence professionals may need to demonstrate endurance, strength, agility, coordination, and the ability to perform physical activities consistently.

For an aspiring candidate, fitness should therefore become part of everyday life rather than something practiced only before an examination.

Running: The Foundation of Endurance

Running is one of the most effective ways to develop cardiovascular endurance.

A beginner can start with comfortable running or jogging and gradually increase distance and intensity.

A structured running routine may include:

  • Warm-up
  • Easy jogging
  • Continuous running
  • Short sprints
  • Recovery
  • Stretching

Candidates should increase their workload gradually rather than attempting difficult distances immediately.

Strength Training

Strength is another important component of physical preparation.

Bodyweight exercises are particularly useful because they require minimal equipment.

Common exercises include:

Push-ups: Develop upper-body strength and endurance.

Squats: Strengthen the legs and lower body.

Lunges: Improve leg strength and balance.

Pull-ups: Help develop upper-body pulling strength.

Planks: Strengthen the core.

The objective should be gradual improvement in technique, repetitions, and endurance.

Agility and Coordination

Defence preparation can also involve movements that require speed and coordination.

Agility drills may include:

  • Shuttle runs
  • Cone drills
  • Ladder drills
  • Short sprints
  • Direction-change exercises
  • Jumping exercises

These activities can make training more dynamic while improving movement control.

Obstacle Training

Obstacle training can combine several physical abilities at once.

Climbing, jumping, crawling, balancing, and running can challenge strength, coordination, endurance, and confidence.

Training should always be performed under appropriate supervision, particularly when using elevated or demanding obstacles.

Recovery Is Part of Training

Many beginners make the mistake of thinking that more training always means better results.

Recovery is equally important.

Candidates should pay attention to:

  • Adequate sleep
  • Hydration
  • Balanced nutrition
  • Rest days
  • Warm-up and cool-down
  • Proper exercise technique

If pain or injury occurs, training should be adjusted and appropriate professional medical advice should be sought.

Build Consistency

The biggest difference between occasional exercise and effective preparation is consistency.

Training for one week does not create long-term fitness. A regular routine maintained over months can help candidates progressively develop their capabilities.

At Sam Bahadur Commando Academy, physical training is designed to encourage discipline, endurance, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
